The Question of Curry

Thu Jul 29, 2004, 11:02 PM
I love curry with rice. I love it. It can be meaty or vegetarian. It can be spicy or mild. It can be soupy or chunky. Made right, it is almost always delicious. But there is one thing I hate about curry rice: the Question of Curry. If you are a curry lover like me you might know what I am talking about. But for those of you who aren't such avid curry rice fans, let me explain the Question of Curry.

How much curry goes with how much rice?

Too much rice and and you run out of curry. Too much curry and you're just eating sauce. I ask, what then is the perfect proportion of curry to rice? Either situation detracts from the overall experience of the meal and is something I would never wish upon another human being, friend or foe. Just the other night I was enjoying my curry when to my horror I realized I had too much curry. I hastily returned to the rice cooker and added a spoonful of rice in hopes of remedying the situation. All was well until the unthinkable happened, I now had too much rice. A disaster was averted by my quick actions as I added a ladleful of curry to my plate. At last the crisis was diffused and peace reigned in the land.

Sadly, the Question of Curry is a constant nightmare everytime I serve a dish to anyone (myself included). In my pursuit of a better curry rice, I pondered the answer to this vile plague. What could the correct proportion be? And then it struck me. What is the most natural thing of all? What is a symbol of harmony in the chaos that is our universe? The answer was everywhere, I just wasn't looking correctly. I wanted to see for myself if mother nature really was as incredible as the answer suggested. My next helping of golden curry rice would be the ultimate test!

And it was good.

The answer to the Question of Curry was the simplest of all: Phi, the golden number that had been discovered aeons ago by some guy named Phidias, probably in his quest to solve the very same issue (What? The Greeks didn't eat curry rice? Hogwash! Everybody eats curry rice!). Upon discovering its properties of perfection, he then applied it to his art and architecture.

Thus, the perfect serving of curry rice is 1 part rice to 1.6 parts curry. The darkness has been dissolved by the sheer brilliance of mother nature. I bow down before her sheer magnificence. And now, if you don't mind, a bowl of curry rice awaits.
